Below are programs for calculating the best attainable match for spatial ecological distributions of presence/absence and abundance, described here. The software may be distributed freely.

The software is available in two languages: R and PASCAL.

• R code. This is the recommended option. R is free statistical software available for Windows, Unix, Linux, and MacOS, and it offers a full interface for data manipulation and graphics. R code is provided for comparing maps of binary (presence-absence) data only.

• PASCAL code. This is compiled code, so it is considerably faster than R. It also includes code for comparing similarity of abundance distributions (not available in R), although the code for abundance can run very slowly and it is advisable to consider other methods of similarity comparison if you are dealing with abundance distributions. This option has the disadvantage that PASCAL is not as widely available as R, and the user interface is more clunky. Also there might be problems if your compiler has different defaults from the compiler I used. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a PASCAL compiler, so I am unable to maintain the PASCAL code. Any problems, please try the R version instead.
